Running through the hyacinth fields: Hollen door de Bollen 2026

Runners through hyacinth and narcissus fields Lisse Hollen door de Bollen 2026

LocalDutchWays Blog — Lisse, Bollenstreek — 29 March 2026

There are not many places in the world where you can run through fields of hyacinths and narcissus while a DJ plays, a brass band cheers you on, and a singer serenades you around the next bend. The bollenstreek in late March is one of them.

Hollen door de Bollen is an annual running and walking event that has quietly become one of the most beloved local traditions in the bulb region. This year marked the 10th edition, a lustrum, and the atmosphere on a Sunday morning in Lisse reflected exactly that.

More than just a run

The event is organised by Roparun Team Bollenstreek, and every euro raised goes directly to the Roparun Foundation, which supports palliative care for cancer patients. Running past fields of narcissus in the early spring light feels a little different when you know that.

It starts and finishes at AV De Spartaan athletics club on the Spekkelaan in Lisse. The distances range from a short junior run for children to a 10-mile performance course and walking routes up to 30 kilometres. There is genuinely something here for everyone: seasoned runners chasing a time, families out for a morning together, and people who simply want to be in the fields when the season is just getting started.

The junior run

The morning begins with the junior run: children from four to eleven years old, two laps of the athletics track, medals waiting at the finish. Bouncy castles on the field, parents cheering from the sidelines, small legs going as fast as they possibly can. It sets the tone for the whole day.

This is one of those local events that international visitors almost never find on their own. It is not in the travel guides. But if you happen to be in the bollenstreek on the last Sunday of March, it is one of the most genuinely local experiences you could stumble into.

Between the hyacinths and narcissus

The route itself is the reason people keep coming back. Running or walking between fields of hyacinths and narcissus at the very start of the season, when the colours are still fresh and the scent is at its strongest, is something that is genuinely hard to put into words.

Music stations are dotted along the route: a DJ at one point, a live band at another, a solo singer further along. The effect is to make the whole thing feel less like exercise and more like a celebration. Which, in a way, it is. The flower season has arrived. The bollenstreek is waking up. This is how the locals mark it.

A personal note

Cynthia and I are recreational runners and we love being out in the region at this time of year. Events like this are exactly what makes living here feel special. Next year we will be at the start line.

This is exactly the kind of event LocalDutchWays exists to share. Not Keukenhof, but the quieter things that locals know and visitors almost never find. The run that turns the first day of the season into something worth remembering.
