Freedom, chips and a cycle home along the canal

Liberation Day festival picnic in the Poelpolder park Lisse 2026

LocalDutchWays Blog — Lisse, Bollenstreek — 9 May 2026

Liberation Day in the Netherlands falls on the 5th of May, marking the end of the Second World War occupation in 1945. Across the country, free festivals are held in the major cities. What many people do not know is that it is not automatically a day off for everyone: only once every five years is it a national public holiday.

A group of local entrepreneurs and sponsors in Lisse decided that was not good enough. Since 2025, they have organised their own Liberation Day festival on a Saturday, so that everyone can actually come. Free entry, open to all, in the park in the Poelpolder.

Into the park

We arrived as a family, meeting friends and their children at the entrance. The park was already busy: picnic blankets spread across the grass, families settling in just beyond the main crowd, groups without children closer to the music. Food trucks, beer taps, a DJ setting up in the distance.

It felt immediately and completely relaxed. Sunglasses on, a patch of grass claimed, children running off in the direction of the bouncy castles and climbing frames. Nobody needed to be anywhere. Nothing was planned.

What freedom actually feels like

There is something about a free outdoor festival on a warm May afternoon that strips everything back. No tickets, no wristbands, no VIP sections. A ball rolling across the grass, a frisbee going nowhere in particular, the sound of a DJ mixing in the background while someone opens another beer. The theme of the day is freedom, and the atmosphere delivers it without trying.

We stayed through the afternoon, moving between the children’s area and the food trucks, catching up with friends while the children wore themselves out on the climbing frames.

Chips at six, home by seven

Around 18:00 we picked up chips for the children and watched the park slowly shift. Picnic blankets folded, pushchairs pointed towards the exits, families making way for the evening crowd. By 19:00 we were on our bikes.

Kids cycling through the meadows along the ringvaart canal Lisse 2026

The ride home along the ringvaart and through the meadows is one of those moments that earns its own place in the day. After hours of noise and crowds, the quiet of the canal path felt like the festival’s best kept secret. The children were tired. The evening light was warm. It was the right way to end it.

Why this belongs on a LocalDutchWays route

A free local festival in a park, organised by the community for the community, on a day that celebrates freedom: this is exactly the kind of thing that does not make it into the guidebooks. If you happen to be in the bollenstreek on Liberation Day weekend, put this in your calendar. Entry is free. Bring a blanket.
