Pick your own tulips in the heart of Lisse

Tulip picking garden at the Vierkant square in Lisse 2026

LocalDutchWays Blog — Lisse, Bollenstreek — 4 April 2026

Some of the best things in the bollenstreek are completely free, completely spontaneous, and completely unknown to the visitors who would love them the most. The Tulip Picking Garden in the heart of Lisse is one of them.

Every spring, ’t Vierkant, the lively restaurant square in the centre of Lisse, transforms into an open-air pluktuin. Crates of tulips appear, a band sets up on the terrace, children queue for face painting, and for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon the whole square feels like a party that nobody planned but everyone is glad they stumbled into.

Picking tulips with the twins

We cycled over from Sassenheim as a family, which is exactly the kind of afternoon this event is made for. The twins made a beeline for the crates the moment we arrived. The process is simple and deeply satisfying: you choose your tulips one by one, hand them over, and watch them be wrapped in paper to take home. Bulb included.

The pride on their faces when they held up their bunches for a photo is the kind of thing you cannot stage. It just happens.

Wreaths, face paint and a band

Alongside the picking garden, children could make wreaths from narcissus flowers: a craft activity that kept small hands busy and produced results that were, frankly, impressive. De Toverkist was on hand for face painting, and De Pretnoten played live music throughout the afternoon, giving the whole square the feel of a village celebration.

While the children were absorbed in all of this, we did what parents do on a warm spring afternoon in a square full of restaurants: we sat down, ordered a drink, and enjoyed the moment.

The square itself

’t Vierkant is one of those places that international visitors rarely find on their own. It is tucked into the centre of Lisse, surrounded by restaurants and terraces, next to the Museum De Zwarte Tulp. On a sunny afternoon during tulip season, every terrace is full and the atmosphere is exactly what you hope for when you visit the bollenstreek: local, relaxed, genuinely Dutch.

This is an event for everyone. Families with young children will find plenty to keep the little ones happy for a full afternoon. Couples or solo visitors who just want to pick a beautiful bunch of tulips and sit in the sun with a coffee are equally welcome. Entry is free, no registration required.
